An Effective Way to Treat Your Skin

Acupuncture has tremendous potential to be helpful in autoimmune conditions and especially those involving the skin.
Traditionally, we would use a combination of acupuncture and herbs to treat skin conditions. Herbs most frequently would be taken orally in powder or capsule form. Herbal substances are used to:

    • “Clear heat” when the skin is red and inflamed
    • “Move blood” when the skin is purple
    • “Open the channels” when the skin is bluish in color
    • “Dispel wind” when there is itching

In practice, it is common to combine these strategies to varying degrees based on the existing signs and symptoms. This way, a unique formula is created to address the present condition and to restore balance.

    Proven Research

Medical doctors at the University of California reviewed dozens of studies settling on 24 that met their criteria for quality research. Seventeen of those 24 studies found acupuncture to be effective in treating various skin conditions including:
    Itch
    Atopic dermatitis
    Psoriasis
    Acne
    Post-herpetic neuralgia
    Dermatitis
    Urticaria (hives)
    Pruritis
    Hyperhidrosis
    Chloasma
    Facial elasticity

In attempts to explain the mechanisms within the biomedical model of understanding, the researchers note that acupuncture is likely to be involved with the “neuromodulation of the immune system in mediating the pathogeneses of inflammatory and infectious skin conditions.” (Translation: Acupuncture modulates the immune system so that it does not do as much damage in autoimmune situations.)

Previous studies with rats support this idea as they show a decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1 beta, and interleukin-6 with acupuncture treatment.
