    Addiction

Studies have shown that acupuncture is viable for treating addiction to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. The success rate is about 50%, which is just about the same as other treatment methods. To increase the success rate, our clinic uses a combination of Chinese herbs and acupuncture.

The beauty of using acupuncture to help with nicotine cessation is that it not only reduces cravings and ease symptoms of withdrawal, but also promotes relaxation and better sleep.

Additional benefits are that acupuncture treats the ailments linked to smoking, such as impairment of the cardiovascular and the bronchopulmonary systems. Many factors will determine the effectiveness of acupuncture for successful smoking cessation, such as how long the patient has smoked, the frequency of treatment, and the patient’s general health.

    Anxiety and Depression

On the average day, we see many patients who suffer from anxiety or depression.

Chinese medicine identifies 10 separate causes for these debilitating conditions. Initially, we use pulse diagnosis to find the root cause. With the cause identified, the treatment follows naturally.

Our success rate for mild anxiety or depression our success rate is very encouraging. Western medicine seems to offer better results for more extreme mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disease.

    Insomnia

One of the worst conditions an individual can struggle with is the inability to sleep. Insomnia exacerbates every condition — anxiety, poor digestion, pain, and many other problems feel more severe when you’re not sleeping well.

Western medicine offers relief in the form of pharmaceutical drugs such as Eszopiclone (Lunesta), Zaleplon (Sonata), Zolpiderm (Ambien), or Ramelteon (Rozerm). These drugs can cause further problems and produce side effects such as extreme drowsiness, night wandering, agitation, balance problems, and impaired thinking, and these can be much worse with elderly patients. Serious allergic reactions are possible, as are odd behaviors, such as preparing and eating food or driving while “sleeping.”

We treat insomnia with Chinese herbs and acupuncture. In Chinese medicine, insomnia is seen as an indicator of lack of function and health. When we re-establish normal function, insomnia is eliminated.

Chinese medicine believes that insomnia is typically a dysfunction in the heart or liver. If blood flow to the heart is reduced, a person will find it difficult to fall asleep. Waking up several times during the night signifies that the liver is sluggish or inflamed. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine treat both issues well.

It is our view that Western drugs do nothing to return a patient to normal function. The insomnia may be gone, but the health and well-being of the individual are not improved.

To be fair, Western medicine is improving its treatment of insomnia by endorsing a healthier diet and more exercise as part of overall treatment. This is a more balanced approach than simply giving drugs, especially to the elderly, and a move that we welcome.

    Postpartum Depression

There is no question that childbirth produces a huge strain on the female body. Loss of blood and fluids during birth, coupled with sleep deprivation during the infant’s early life, can leave a many women exhausted, depressed, and anxious. The solutions provided by Western medicine include iron supplements, hormone replacement, counseling, and anti-depressants or serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs.

Chinese medicine takes a different approach altogether. Astragalus, ginseng, and many other tonic herbs, when administered by an expert Chinese herbalist, can help restore vitality and energy, which is vital for a woman suffering postpartum depression. Results seen with Chinese medicine are superior to those seen in Western medicine because the patient is restored to their pre-birth levels of health and energy.

    Stress & Tension

Chinese herbs and/or acupuncture are ideal treatments for tension and stress, as both can result in relaxation and improved balance.

A Georgetown University Medical Center study found that rats who received acupuncture after being subjected to stressful conditions showed lowered blood hormone levels secreted by the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis, which controls reactions to stress and regulates processes like the immune system, digestion, emotions and moods, and sexuality.

They also measured the levels of NPY, a peptide secreted during a “fight or flight” response. The scientists reported that “our growing body of evidence points to acupuncture’s protective effect against the stress response.”

Acupuncture is a huge part of our treatment

Acupuncture is a huge part of our treatment because it impacts the body on so many different fronts. It helps reduce excess cortisol and improve the stress response. It balances hormones and facilitates all aspects of body function. Chinese herbs and dietary supplements are also used to address deficiencies and help restore flow and balance.

Lifestyle also matters at East Wind. Our focus on individualized dietary plans, getting proper sleep and stress management.

Most importantly, we empower YOU by showing you the underlying concepts of a healthy individual. Our health care team will help you understand health strategies so, together, we can make a positive impact on your health.
